Committees
PeirceLink Coordinator
Create and coordinate schedule for
PeirceLink editors. Edit weekly PeirceLink. Coordinate training of new editors.  

PericeLink Editors
Edit and distribute for review
PeirceLink every two months (based on number of editors).

Aproximate time: 2 hours each issue between Tuesday and Friday – this can be done
from home.
Creative Arts and Sciences
Creative Art and Sciences (CAS)  works with the principal and teachers to coordinate art,
drama and science programs for the classroom.   

Members of this team have three responsibilities:  
1.  Meet with other team members, teachers, and principal to decide on programs.  
Approximate time:   2 hours per month  

2.  Run implementation of programs in the grade level they are responsible  for including
coordination with teachers, announcements in
PeirceLink etc.   
Approximate time:  12 hours total when programs are running.  

3.  Attend citywide monthly meeting  - Tuesday morning – 2 -2.5 hours – note: this is highly recommended for team members, not mandatory.
Approximate time:  2  hours per month.
Back to School Picnic
Create and post flyer and signs.  Coordinate with school and pizza business for pizza.  
Purchase drinks for sale. Coordinate distribution of pizza and sale of drinks on
event day.

Approximate time:  5 hours in the Fall excluding event time.  
Membership
Create membership letter.
Create and post flyers and signs. Place reminders in PeirceLink. Collect payments.

Approximate time:  1
5 hours in the Fall.  
Mom/Dad’s Nite Out
Arrange house and theme (if desired) for events two times per year (
Fall and Spring). Create and post flyers and signs. Support hostess/host with setup and cleanup including organizing food and drinks.  

Approximate time:  3 hours each in the Fall and Spring, excluding event time.  
Book Fair
Coordinate with school and book fair company.  Work with teachers for teacher wish-lists
and recommended books.  Create and post flyers and signs.  Get volunteers to assist
with sales on date of event.  

Approximate time:  3 hours, excluding event time.
Winter Community Event
Select and execute an event for families in the winter. Ideas include local college
basketball game, bingo, family dance.

Approximate time:  unknown (depends based on idea and number of volunteers).
PTO Email
Maintain PTO email distribution list.  Send out weekly P
eirceLink notice and other PTO
messages as needed.  Check PTO email mailbox and respond to or forward emails as
necessary.  At the beginning of year, work with Directory person to update email
addresses.   

Approximate time:  4 hours to setup in the beginning of the year, 1 hour per week after
that, from home.

Webmaster
Maintain PTO website.  

Approximate time:  10 hours in Spring for updates, 1 hour per week from home.

Directory
Update directory with incoming Kindergarten and new families information.  Update class
lists and teacher information.  

Approximate time:  
12 hours during first two weeks of school.
City Wide Representatives
Attend citywide meetings, document and distribute minutes.  Represent Peirce’s
interests.  Provide details to the Peirce Community.

Approximate time:  3 hours per month.  Note:  this can be split among people.
Peirce Merchandising
Coordinate with membership chair to sell t-shirts and sweatshirts.  Deliver sweatshirts
and t-shirts.  Decide whether program should be cancelled or modified to order more or
different things.  

Approximate time:  5 hours during membership drive and additional time for sales at
additional events.
Library including Gift Program
Coordinate with membership chair to announce program on Membership letter.  
Coordinate with Librarian to order books and place in library.  

Approximate time:  10 hours in the Fall, 2 hours each month.  
5th Grade
Coordinate with 5th grade teachers to have 5th graders complete all their “special
activities” such as year book, fundraising, field trips.  

Approximate time: 10 hours per period.  

Health and Crisis Person
Consult with the school should problems arise such as lice, outbreaks of illness.

Respect for Human Differences
The Respect for Human Differences Team includes parents, teachers and principal.
Responsibilities include planning and executing two events each year that promote
tolerance and understanding within the Peirce community.


Time requirements include attending about two 1.5 hour meetings each year, and 8
hours helping with each event, not including the event itself. Most events require publicity,
organizing food donations through room parents and preparing hand-outs and hands-on
project materials (for drawings, quilts etc.).

K and New Parents
Attend all kindergarten events to meet and greet new parents and families.  Recruit and
assign new families to current Peirce families.  Run an event over the summer for new
families.  

Approximate time:  20 hours in late Spr
ing and early Fall .
Gardening/Landscaping
Organize fall and spring school grounds clean-up and mulching,
either grassroots effort, or contract a landscaping company.  
Plant the pots in front and in
back of the school, Fall, Winter,
and Spring.  Tend the teacher plots surrounding the
kindergarten playground.

Approximate:  
20 hours in Fall, Winter and Spring.
Program Speakers
Find 1
or 2 speakers per year for the school.  Create flyers and posting including placing them in schools.  Monitor speakers on topics of interest to elementary school families and submit listings to PeirceLink.

Approximate time:  10-20 hours per year, depending on number of speakers.
Room Parent Coordinators
Recruit 4 room parents for each classroom during first week of school  via posting signup
sheets outside each classroom.  Work with Directory person to create a phone chain list
for emergencies.  Periodically, contact parents for assistance in advertising school
events, gathering volunteers, and assisting in classroom programs.  

Approximate time:  5 hours first 2 weeks of school and then 1 hour per month as year
progresses.
Social Action
Plan and implement social action project appropriate for elementary students with input
from Peirce community including teachers, students and parents.  Responsibilities
include soliciting project ideas and volunteers, identifying suitable project, obtaining
approval from Peirce Principal, notifying students and parents about project and inviting
them to participate (through P
eirceLink and notices distributed by teachers to students),
collecting materials and delivering to recipients. Projects occur throughout year.  

Approximate time:  at least 12 hours in Fall, Winter, and Spring.
Teacher Appreciation
Periodically, throughout the year, arrange lunches and modest gifts for teachers.  

Approximate time:  5 hours 3 times per year.
Understanding Our Differences

Understanding Our Differences presents six programs to 3 grade levels:  
3rd grade:    Blindness and Deafness;  4th grade:  Learning Disabilities, Special Medical
Conditions(Asthma, Diabetes and Seizures Disorders) and Developmental Disabilities
and 5th Grade:  Physical  Disabilities.  The responsibilities for the leaders are to  make
certain that the grade level coordinators establish a schedule for the programs and
implement them according to the established curriculum.  The grade coordinator is
responsible  to gets unit leaders and coordinates with teachers to implement the
program.    Unit leaders, attend training (4 hours), run planning meetings week prior to
each program so that schedule and responsibilities can be reviewed and run  the
program in the classrooms.  Could spend no more than 5 hours per program.  Unit
Leaders are probably more like 6-7 hours per classroom program.

Approximate time:  Leaders:  20 hours plus 4 hour training.   Grade Coordinators: 10
hours plus 4 hour training.   Unit Leaders:  7 hours in class plus 4 hours training.   

Assistant Treasurer
Work closely with and provide assistance to the treasurer. Responsibilities include updating the budget, writing checks for PTO sponsored events and purchases, maintaining the checking account.

Approximate time: 1 hour a week, more during Membership Drive and Budget Planning (March)

Monthly Calendar
Create the monthly poster board of upcoming events for the front and back outdoor PTO boxes. Post in boxes.

Approximate time: 20 minutes each month.
Photography
Take pictures at PTO sponsored events, Creative Arts and Sciences programs, and other major school events. Edit into a year-end DVD.

Approximate time: Depends on month and number of events planned. 10 hours for year end presentation.
Playground
Fundraising and planning for new playground facilities or updates.

Approximate time: Depends on scope of projects

Mystery Dinner
Community event and fundraiser for the school. Co-chairs manage a committee to help with running the event.

Approximate time: 20 hours in the fall.

Safety
Address/identify safety issues concerning the school and student body. Past issues have been messy side walks and crowded and unsafe back parking lot.

Approximate time: Depends on year.

Newton Serves
Get a list of projects from Principal and teachers, fill out form at City Hall, place ads in PeirceLink, put info on flyer for backpacks, get supplies needed for event, send someone to City Hall on morning of event to get tee-shirts & food, be at event & coordinate workers. Must meet with custodian prior to event to make list of supplies.

Approximate time: 4 hours, plus day of event

Spring Event/Auction
The School Auction is held every other year. On the off years, a spring community event is held in the spring.

Parent Liaison to the METCO and SPED teams.
